Jewell Langston Hagan

    Jewell Langston Hagan, age 91, of Monticello passed away on June 7, 2017.
Mrs. Hagan was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hagan, her parents, Audie and Ruth Langston, and her sister, Genevieve Gillaspie. She is survived by two brothers, Jessie Langston (Betty) and Eugene Langston (Marjorie), one daughter, Juanice Hughes (Ray), one son, Bruce Hagan (Page), two grandchildren (Grayson and Mac Hagan), three step-grandchildren (Ray Hughes, Jr. (Jacqueline), Heather Boyd (Whit), and Glen Hughes), seven step great-grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.
She was a long-time elementary school teacher and received her master’s degree in reading from Florida State University. She was honored to be a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society of women educators.
Mrs. Hagan was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello where she served as both Deacon and Elder and was active in the ministry of the women of the church. She and her husband established a strong spiritual foundation for their family.
She was an avid gardener and a long-time member of the Monticello Garden Club. She developed her love of plants and flowers from her mother and has passed that passion on to her family.
Mrs. Hagan had a keen interest in genealogy and local history and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
A memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017. A private burial will be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of Big Bend Hospice.
