Downtown Christmas this Friday

Monticello Downtown Community Christmas is this coming Friday, December 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. Come share in the annual tree lighting, listen to the local choirs from Elizabeth Baptist Church and New Bethel AME Church sing Christmas carols around the lighted Christmas tree, and watch in delight as Santa comes around the courthouse on a fire truck!
East Dogwood Street will be lined with local not-for-profit organizations, sharing information, along with special giveaways for visitors to their tables, from hot cocoa to candy to toy giveaways, there’s something for everyone! Miss Natalie from the Jefferson County RJ Bailar Public Library will have a table with crafts and books for the children, Mr. Twister will be twisting his balloons to give away to those young
and old and Miss Abigail will be ready to paint smiling faces!
Make sure to look for Santa’s Letter Box! You will find it on the United Way table. You can bring your own letter to send to Santa or create one that night! Santa letters put into the box that night will be published in the Monticello News in time for the Christmas!
Downtown shops, restaurants, and the Monticello Opera House are all taking part in the Scavenger Hunt and Raffle! Just look for the Santa flier in the window to see who is participating! There’s no purchase to play, you must be over 18 years old, and only one card per family. Just stop in one of the participating merchants and pick up a scavenger card! Make sure to turn your card in once it's full. You could be the winner of a great raffle prize from one of the participating merchants!
Come hungry! Not only will the local restaurants be open for the festivities with their specialties, Boy Scout Troop #803 will be holding their annual Chili Cook-Off in front of Johnson’s Barbershop at 6:30 p.m. and New Bethel AME Church will be selling their famous fried fish! Make sure to stop by and support your local Monticello Volunteer Fire Department, they will be selling tickets for their tasty Boston Butts…just in time for the holidays!
It’s the perfect time to start your Christmas shopping! Local vendors and the downtown shops will be offering Christmas Specials and one of a kind gifts. You just never know what kind of treasures you will find.
After watching the tree lighting ceremony in the Wirick-Simmons House garden, take a tour of the house, it's listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Bring your family and come experience Christmas in small town Monticello.
