Food assistance programs provide eligible senior citizens, and others in need, in Jefferson County with an opportunity to receive free food packages each month. The packages contain such food items as cheese, canned chicken or tuna, shelf-stable milk, beans, rice, cereal, juice, and the like.
These supplemental programs are usually joined by Second Harvest of the Big Bend in serving this rural community and are meant to provide assistance to citizens at no charge on a monthly basis, as many citizens living in Jefferson County are struggling to make ends meet. These programs help them to obtain the nutritious food they need to stay healthy.
This month these monthly food share distributions are held at Christ Episcopal Church from 9 to 11 a.m. on the last Friday, August 25 at 425 North Cherry Street, and at New Bethel AME, at 8 a.m. on the fourth Saturday, August 26 at 6496 Ashville Highway.
