Neighborhood feud leads to arrest

A set of neighbors were at the heart of an arrest on July 14, when Lakeshia Demitra Dawson, 25 of Monticello, was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and simple battery. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, on July 14, deputies were dispatched to the Jefferson Arms Apartments in Screen Shot 2015-07-28 at 3.14.26 PMreference to a physical dispute involving a knife. They arrived on scene and made contact with the victim, left the victim to look for Dawson, and found Dawson: as soon as the deputies left the victim, Dawson reportedly returned to begin attacking the victim again— this time without the knife. The Deputies had little choice but to deploy their tasers on Dawson when she would not comply with their orders to get on the ground. While emergency medical services was contacted to remove the taser prongs, and the deputies dealt with the suspect, Monticello Police Department (MPD) Officer Michael Orphee recovered a seven-inch kitchen knife believed to be the weapon used in the original dispute. According to the victim and witnesses, Dawson approached the victim on the victim’s own front porch. Dawson was wielding a knife and yelling that the victim “was driving her crazy.” The victim’s daughter interposed herself between the knife-wielding Dawson and her mother. Bond was set at $5,500 and she bonded out of jail on July 19.
