July 16, 2010James Matthew Smith

James Matthew Smith, 68, of Woodville, FL died on Saturday, July 10, 2010. Visitation was held at 10 a.m. EST on Thursday, July 15, 2010. The service followed at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Woodville. Burial was at the Woodville Cemetery.

James was born in Vernon, FL and resided in Leon County for most of his life. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Woodville.

He is survived by his wife Betty Smith; his four children: James Michael Smith of St. Marks, FL, Lisa Lynn Ross of Woodville, Tonya Michelle Smith of St. Marks, and Vernon Roger Smith (Juana) of Ft. Knox, KY; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.


July 14, 2010Emma Lee Coleman Cox

Emma Lee Coleman Cox was born on April 4, 1930 in Green Cove Springs, Clay County, Florida to Rosa and Abe Coleman. Both of Emma's parents, as well as four brothers (Albert, Abe Jr., Lewis, and Earnest) and three sisters (Leslie, Ethel, and Dorothy) preceded her in death.

Emma was born and reared in Clay County, Florida where she attended public school for education. She confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age. She was baptized and became a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Pier Station, Florida.

On October 6, 1951, Emma married Raleigh R. Cox, Jr., who also preceded her in death. They later moved to Monticello, Florida where he began his career as a mathematics teacher in the Jefferson County School System. They were blessed with three children: Gloria Cox, Lillian Brown, and Raleigh R. Cox, III.

Following a lengthy illness, God Almighty summoned Emma home to rest on Friday, June 25, 2010. A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Green Cove Springs, Florida; Rev. R.L. Wright, pastor; Bishop Chancey King, Sr. presiding, pastor of Greater Works Tabernacle, Conley, Georgia; and Rev. John Reese, eulogist.

She leaves to mourn her passing, yet treasuring her love, her children: Raleigh R. Cox, III, Daytona Beach, Florida; Gloria Cox, Monticello, Florida; and Lillian Brown, Daytona Beach, Florida. Her grandchildren: Bishop Chancey (Cycloria) King, Sr., Rex, Georgia; Apostle Anthony (Natasha) Cox, Thomason, Georgia; and Talisa Brown and Tiffany Brown, Daytona Beach, Florida. Her great-grandchildren: Chancey, Jr., Sherrie, and LaShay King, all of Rex, Georgia; Anthona, Anthony, Jr., and Nathaniel Cox, all of Thomaston, Georgia; and Raleigh Snead, Daytona Beach, Florida. Her brother: Leroy (Mercedes) Coleman, Winter Park, Florida. Her sisters: Sophia Brown and Savannah Jennings, both of Green Cove Springs, Florida. Her brothers-in-law: Augustus H. Cox, Jacksonville, Florida and Nathan Jones, of Penney Farms, Florida. Her sister-in-law: Dorothy Coleman of Green Cove Springs, Florida. And a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.


July 08, 2010James William Wentland "Jimmie" Ashurst

James William Wentland "Jimmie" Ashurst, 91, passed away at his home in Monticello, Friday July 2, 2010 of natural causes. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. EST, Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Lloyd. A reception for family and friends will follow after the services. A graveside service will be held at Dayton, Ohio at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, Fl. 32308. On behalf of my Father, James W. Ashurst, I would like to thank the Big Bend Hospice for their loving support for the family and the loving care that they gave and showed to my father James Ashurst.

James was born December 5, 1918, in Chicago, Ill. to Henry and Eva Thornsburg Wentland. He was an Army Veteran and designated Staff Sergeant, tank commander and bugler under George Patton. He retired from Miami Dade Co. Port Authority. He loved building airplanes, flying and ceramics as a hobby. He is survived by son, Timothy Lee Ashurst and daughter, Virginia Agnes Ashurst Waldron and husband Bradley; grandchildren, Kristine Marie Dooley and husband Paul, Karen Sue Bridenbaugh and husband Steven, Timothy Lee Ashurst, Jr., Bradley Waldron, Jr., Kristine Marie Waldron, and Jonathan Wentland Waldron; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and an extended number of family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Allen Ashurst, and son, John Allen Ashurst.

Alice L. Connell, 74, passed away early Saturday morning in Tallahassee. She was a native of Grand Ridge, Fl. and moved to Tallahassee, Fl. in 1953. She attended Cody Pentecostal Holiness Church in Jefferson County where she was a Sunday School Teacher, choir member, part of the Ladies Auxiliary, and Connell Family Singers. She was a very faithful and active member of Cody PHC, and she was a very giving person, always putting others before herself.

She is survived by her mother, Lucile Bradley of Mariana, Fl; three sons, Edward Connell of Tallahassee, Fl, Brent Connell of Crawfordville, Fl, and Glen Connell (Kim) of Tallahassee, Fl; daughter, Debbie Connell of Tallahassee, Fl,; three sisters, Joyce Bradley, of Grand Ridge, Fl, Barbra Hattaway of Tallahassee, Fl, and Sue Bradley of Grand Ridge, Fl; and her six grandchildren who were the light of her life, Stephanie, Amanda, Jonathan, Cody, Jessica, and Lacy Connell., and a whole host of other friends and family that she loved and cared for. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hoover Connell, father, Samuel Bradley, and a brother James Kirby "Bubby" Bradley.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Cody Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial at Cody Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 5, 2010 at Cody PHC. Creasie Ann Secord, age 46, passed away in Thomasville, Georgia, June 30, 2010.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2010 at Beggs Funeral Home Monticello Chapel (850-997-5612), 485 E. Dogwood Street, Monticello, Florida 32344. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the chapel. Internment will follow the service at Elizabeth Cemetery.

Mrs. Secord, was a truck driver and had lived in Wichita Falls, Texas. She was of Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Terrance Secord of Monticello; two sons, Alexander Burdick and Kevin (Brandy) Bowers of Monticello; mother Betty Hobbs of Monticello; two brothers Ferrell (Kay) Hobbs of Woodville, FL and David (Brenda) Hobbs of Monticello; two sisters Helen (Ike) Lewis and Sherrell (Ron) Dill of Monticello; three grandchildren Annmarie Bowers, Kaylee and Camden Burdick.

Mrs. Secord was preceded in death by her father Amos Hobbs.

David Kenneth Pearson, 43, of Quincy, FL died on Saturday, June 26, 2010 in Gainesville, FL at Shands Hospital. He was a native of Miami, FL.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Christ Episcopal Church in Monticello, FL. The family will receive friends following the service at the Christ Episcopal Church Parish Hall, with light refreshments served.

David moved to Monticello in 1987 and was employed at Farmers and Merchants Bank. In 2004, due to failing health, he moved to Quincy to be closer to family. He was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, and a member of the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew. Following his move to Quincy, he was a member of the Lion's Club of Quincy.

He is survived by his parents Dr. Don and Sandra Cross of Quincy; his grandparents Jerry and Viola Cross of Quincy; his uncle Tim Pearson (Joann) of Winston-Salem, NC; his aunt Kathy Williams (Hiram) of Hampstead, NC; and several cousins from out-of-state.

Christ Episcopal Church is located at 425 North Cherry Street, at the corner of High Street and US Highway 19, just two blocks north of the courthouse.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Garden Fund.


June 23, 2010Donna L. Bishop

Donna L. Bishop, age 45, passed away in Gainesville, Florida, June 15, 2010.

Mrs. Bishop had lived in Tallahassee, FL before moving to Monticello twelve years ago.

She was a supervisor in the DMS Department with the State of Florida and was member of Central Baptist Church in Aucilla.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, at the Central Baptist Church, in Aucilla.

Internment will follow the service at Bishop Cemetery in Aucilla. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 21st at Beggs Funeral Home Monticello Chapel, 485 E. Dogwood Street, Monticello, Florida.

Mrs. Bishop is survived by her husband William "Billy" Bishop of Aucilla; her mother Freddie Wuerffell Bishop of Tallahassee; one brother Brian (Melissa) Bishop of Tallahassee; niece and nephew Kayla and Gus Bishop, and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father Donald Bishop.


June 23, 2010Laurie Hugh Reams

Laurie Hugh Reams, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away in Tallahassee, Florida, June 19, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M, Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at the Lamont Baptist Church, in Lamont, Florida. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at Walker Cemetery.

Mr. Reams was a native and lifelong resident of Lamont. He was born October 20, 1932 to Alvis W. and Amanda Wigelsworth Reams. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1949 and was a member of the Future Farmers of America and the Tiger football team. He served his country as a member of the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1953. Laurie earned his B. S. degree in Public Administration from Florida State University in 1958 and was recognized as an Emeritus Alumnus in 2008.

Mr. Reams was a retired Rural Carrier with the United States Postal Service and retired with 49 years of service, receiving recognition for attaining over 1,000,000 miles travelled without an accident. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed westerns and old war movies and was a passionate Seminole fan. His one-of-a kind sense of humor was legendary. He was a member of the American Legion Post 49, National Rifle Association, National Rural Letter Carriers Association, Three Rivers Hunting Club and the National Cattlemen's Association. Laurie was a Century Pioneer Family Farmer.

Mr. Reams is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Sheffield Reams of Lamont; two sons, Henry Hugh Reams (Malissa) of Dixie, Georgia and Kirk Bradley Reams of Lamont, Florida; two daughters, Patricia Reams McLeod (Joey) of Tallahassee and Laura Reams Dull (William, Jr.) of Lamont; one sister, Gladys Reams Earnest (Leland) of Deland, Florida; his mother-in-law, Hoyt Kinsey Sheffield of Monticello; five grandchildren, William Dull, III, Amanda Dull, Devin Reams, Skylar Reams, and Hayden Reams; one great grandchild, Aubrey Raker and a host of other special family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Henry W. and Thomas M. Reams; his sister, Ruby Reams Campbell; a nephew, Lee Earnest; and his father-in-law, Luther R. Sheffield, Sr.

June 16, 2010Patricia (Miss Pat) Steinhorst

Patricia (Miss Pat) Steinhorst passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family on June 12, 2010, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

She was born on March 7, 1933 in Medina, New York to Percy Edwin Johnson and Frances Marion Stenasic. She was a life long resident of Monticello, Florida, where she was best known as (Miss Pat) co-owner of the Little University Daycare with her dear friend Olivia Flowers, which they operated for 30 years and schooled several generations of Jefferson County children.

She is survived by her children, Lisa Martin (Jeffrey) of Monticello, Richard Steinhorst (Susan) of Inglis, FL and Paula Conklin of Jacksonville, FL and her sister Marleen Bowers (Bob) of Lockport, New York. Her grandchildren include, Melissa Martin, Michael Steinhorst, Chad Conklin, Robert Conklin, and Matthew Munro and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her youngest son, Eric Scott Steinhorst, and her brother PFC Richard E. Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to be made to the American Lung Association, 539 Silver Slipper Lane, Tallahassee, Florida, 32303-4873.

Graveside services will be held at Elizabeth Cemetery on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at 10:00 a.m.


June 16, 2010Willie Sloan

Willie Sloan, 89, affectionately known as "Mutt or Mutta Sugar," passed on June 11, 2010 in Tallahassee, FL.

A native of Monticello, FL he was the son of the late Darthula Finlayson Sloan and Bailey Foster Sloan, Sr. He attended the public schools of Jefferson County and later joined the U.S. Army in 1941, serving in World War II until he was honorably discharged.

Sloan was the proprietor of the Branch Street (Sloan) Funeral Home for over 45 years and Sloan's Taxi Service for over 60 years prior to the taxi service closing in 2008. He was the first black owner of a taxi service in Jefferson County, and for a long time the only taxi service in the county. He later provided service to other surrounding counties. He would respond to any call, day or night, rain or shine. His funeral services extended throughout the state of Florida and the United States.

His motto was "We Are The Trusted Name In Funeral Services."

Sloan was a member of Memorial Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully on Usher Board No. 3 until his health failed. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #251, the American Legion Post #49, Solomon Lodge #86, H.E. Daniels #532 P.H.A, the Chamber of Commerce, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Florida, and a dedicated supporter of the Florida Sheriff's Association for many years. His unselfish commitment to his community will always be remembered.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at Memorial Missionary Baptist Church with Moderator J. B. Duval, pastor, officiating. Burial was at Oakfield Cemetery.

Mourning his passing, yet rejoicing in knowing that he is with the Lord, are his two loving daughters, Rose Mary Sloan Cooper and Kathi Sloan Hansberry (Tony); four grandchildren, Kristen Cooper-Showell, Mary A. Sloan, Tony D. Hansberry, II and Tyler Sloan Hansberry; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Showell, Jordan Sloan, William J. Sloan and Ashley Cooper; nieces, Cynthia Edwards Henry (Jimmie), Sharon Davis, Gwendolyn Mazyzk (Harris), Deborah Duhart, and Brenda Cooks (Henry); nephews, Michael, Ricky and Ronald Rogers; a special devoted friend, Jessie Parker; grand nieces and nephews; other relatives and many caring and supportive friends. Willie was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Rosa Lee Smith Sloan, three sisters, Sadie S. Swan, Mamie S. Edwards, and Daisy S. Duhart, and brother Bailey F. Sloan, Jr.


June 16, 2010Rev. James Edwin Riherd

Rev. James Edwin Riherd, 89, died May 24, 2010 in Jasper, Ga. A memorial service was held in Jasper on June 8.

Jimmy was born in Cave City, Ky. on February 24, 1921. He graduated from Georgetown College (Ky.) in 1940 and received his Master's Degree from Middle Tennessee State University. He attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Tx. For over 25 years, he served as the minister for Baptist churches in Arkansas and Tennessee. He was the organizer and minister for Georgian Hills Baptist Church in Memphis, Tn. In 1966, he and his family relocated to Monticello, Fl., where he was a part-time minister and a high school math teacher. Later he continued his career in education in Quitman, Ga. He continued to preach and teach Bible classes into his 80's in South Georgia.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice Craig Riherd; by his second wife, Evelyn King Riherd; and by his son, Ron Riherd. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Dimbleby; his son, Ed Riherd of New York City; his daughter, Donna Miller of Tallahassee, FL; his grandchildren Stephanie Gault of Clinton, Ms.; Stephen Fulford of Monticello; and Chelsey Smith of Jasper; and his seven great-grandchildren.

Juanita Birdwell Driggers, 82, passed away Thursday June 3, 2010 in Tallahassee. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 7, 2010 at Immanuel Baptist Church with burial at Roselawn cemetery. Family will received friends from 5 until 7 p.m., Sunday at Beggs Funeral Home, Apalachee Parkway Chapel, (850) 942-2929. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 2351 Mahan Dr., Tallahassee, Fla. 32308. She was a native of Detroit, MI and former resident of Jefferson County living most of her life in Tallahassee Fla. She enjoyed crafts, working outside in her yard, music and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Juanita is survived by a brother, Jearl Birdwell (Norma) of Tallahassee; two sisters, Bernice Birdwell Quick (Wayne) and Delories Birdwell Greene both of Tallahassee, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Driggers and her parents, Louis B. and Gordia Birdwell.


May 28, 2010Thomas LeRoy Wallace

Thomas LeRoy Wallace, 57, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at his home in Monticello, FL. He was born and raised in New Jersey, moving to the Jefferson County area in 2006 to be closer to his sister. He worked in the construction field all his adult life and has been under the gentle and efficient care of Big Bend Hospice since locating to the area.

He is survived by his mother Jane Hand of Monticello; grandmother Dorothy Tifft of NY; daughter Desiree' Jones (Keith) of FL and her children Kerristin, Michael, and Robert; stepchildren: Allen and Amanda Blizzard of NJ, and Tiffany Solomon and her son Joey of NJ; sisters: Deborah Snapp of Monticello (Clyde,) Rosemary Fields of KY, Jacquelyn Hilsenbeck (Gary) of OR, and Mildred Phillips (Rich) of CT; brothers Robert (Amy) of FL and Richard (Kathy) of NY; and other family and friends.

He was predeceased by his father George Wallace in 1989 and his brother George, Jr in 2004.

Thomas was loved dearly by his family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

ICS Cremation and Funeral Home in Lake City, FL is handling the final arrangements for the family, 386-755-9292. A family gathering will be held in Brooksville, FL in August 2010 at the home of his daughter Desiree Jones.

Della Ann Stewart, age 65 of Monticello, Florida, passed away peacefully May 18, 2010, at her home, surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. EDT Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Beggs Funeral Home Monticello Chapel, 485 E. Dogwood Street, Monticello, Florida, with internment at Oakfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, May 21, 2010, from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. EDT at Beggs Funeral Home Monticello Chapel.

Mrs. Stewart, was born in Jackson, Mississippi on June 1, 1944, the first child of Alvin B. Allen and Hilda Bane Allen.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years Oran Robert Stewart; her daughter Carol Lynn Salter and one son

Robert Bryant Stewart his wife Melissa M. Stewart, a sister Sally Manges, brother-in-law Larry Manges, sister-in-law Pat Rhodes, four grandchildren, Heather Ann Salter, Robert Bryant Stewart, Jr., Ryan Glenn Stewart and Raegan Marie Stewart.

"My Mother, was the best cook ever, there was nothing she could not cook. Just imagine the finest restaurant you had ever eaten in, and that was a regular meal at Della's kitchen. For those of you who got some of her recipes you are blessed she did not give them out every often. Mom also had the strongest faith in God you had ever seen; she totally put her life in the

Lord's hands. That faith never varied not one bit, she would preach the word to everyone who come her way and did so until her the final days. She when back to college in her 50s to take some floral classes and aced her college entry exams without even studying, she graduated top of her class coming out with being a certified florist and did so in one and a half years.

Her, favorite activities where cooking, doing floral arrangements, playing piano, church and Fellowship and most of all spending time with her grandchildren doing arts and crafts.

Mom you are the greatest, you will be missed, we all love you and will see you again, Just hold that gate for me.

Barrett "Beau" Underwood, 60, of St. Marys, GA, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2010 at the Southeast Georgia Health System, Camden Campus, St. Marys, GA.

A native of Lakeland, FL, he had resided in Camden County, GA, since 1987. He was retired from VT Griffin Co. at Kingsbay with 20 years of service, a life member of the VFW of Kingsland, GA; member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and a veteran of the U.S. Marines serving during Vietnam.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys, GA.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Lee Underwood of Dixie, GA; sons, Ryan Underwood (Casey) of Jacksonville, FL and Cody Underwood (Allexis) of Charleston, SC; daughters, Laura Lenae Hill of Pensacola, FL, Aimee Underwood of St. Marys, GA, and Kerry Underwood of Kingsland, GA; brother, Jackie Underwood of Panama City, FL; sisters, MaeDeb Rushing of Perry, FL, Suzy Bigby of Tallahassee, FL, and Melanie Bennett of Perry, FL; grandchildren, Avery, Luna, Taylor, Clyde, Keala and Wyatt; several nieces and nephews.

May 19, 2010Jake Hunter Snelgrove

Jake Hunter Snelgrove, age 22, of Marianna passed away on Friday, May 14, 2010. He had lived in Marianna since 1995 having moved here from Monticello, FL at the age of seven. Jake was a member of St. Lukes' Episcopal Church, a recent graduate of Chipola College and a 2006 graduate of Marianna High School where he played football and was the team captain his senior year. He had plans to attend the University of Florida to attain a degree in Geomatics to become a licensed land surveyor and join his father and brother in the family business, Snelgrove Surveying and Mapping. Jake had a passion for the outdoors and spent his leisure time hunting, fishing and four wheeling with his many friends and family members. He was a friend to many and had a special bond with his older brother Jesse whom he loved and respected.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, George Core Snelgrove; uncle, Bill Snelgrove; and cousin, Dustin Groom Simmons.

Survivors include his parents, Paul and Gail Snelgrove of Marianna, brother; Jesse Allen Snelgrove and wife, Kristina and their children Waylon and Holly of Marianna, sister, Mary Elizabeth Savage; grandparents, Hardy and Lilly Mae Brumbley and Mary Snelgrove of Monticello FL; great grandmother, Liela Youngblood of Monticello, FL; aunts, Mendy Simmons of Monticello, FL, and Miriam Bradley of Spring, TX; uncles, Richard Brumbley and wife, Audrey and Ron Brumbley and wife Tammie all of Monticello, FL; god parents, Mack and Betsy Barfield of Monticello; and numerous great uncles, aunts and cousins.

Services for Jake were held on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with Father Norman Bray officiating. Interment followed in the Snelgrove Family Cemetery, Cypress, FL.

Visitation was held on Monday, May 17, 2010 from 5 to 7 P.M. at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Jake to Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, 4362 Lafayette Street, Marianna, FL 32446.
