Slots are still available for golfers to take part in the Eighth Annual Rotary Sandbaggers Golf Classic, set for Saturday, March 20 at the Country Club, with tee time at 1 p.m. Golfers are asked to be present at 12 p.m. for check in. The tournament will be a shotgun start with a best ball format for the four-person teams competing. The entry fee is $65 per person, and includes 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, the excellent dinner with all of the trimmings, and colossal door prizes. This year there will also be a hole-in-one prize of a brand new 2010 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab pick up truck with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $39,500. Coordinators will not disclose which hole the contest will be on, but it will be on a par-three hole at the Country Club. The truck is sponsored by Maroone Chevrolet and Chuck Sarkisian, account executive. Hole sponsorships are also still available for $200 and sponsors will have their name placed on a particular hole of the course. Trophies will be awarded for Last Place, Low Gross, and Low Net. "We are always looking for someone new to take the biggest and most coveted Last Place trophy," said Rotarian James Muchovej. Last year's event saw more than 20 golfers and raised some $1,000 for the Rotary's Youth Camp, which serves severely challenged youths in the community. This year, coordinators fully expect many more golfers and much more to be raised. Last year, the coveted "Last Place" trophy was awarded to the Rotary "B" team of Merle Zinck, Chuck Sarkisian, Bruce Sandell, and Tom Hogle. The team from C&D Pro Shop, Robert Batista, Carl Scarberry, Todd Thigpen, and Chuck Chambers won "Low Gross". "Low Net" went to the Rotary "A" team of Bill Gunnels, Tom Conley, Mal Joplin, and Guenter Maresch. For further information contact Mal Jopling at 997-4335.

The Aucilla Christian Academy varsity Lady Warriors softball team now stands 4-1 on the season after snagging victories in the past two contests. The Lady Warriors faced off against Altha for the first time in a few years, Feb. 19 and Aucilla hammered their opponent, 14-2. The game was called after the fifth inning due to the ten-run rule. "The girls played well overall," said Head Coach Edwin Kinsey. "We committed no defensive errors and hit the ball fairly well. The pitching was a little slower than what we are used to, but the girls need to learn to adjust and be patient at the plate. Everyone got in the game and did a great job." Taryn Copeland pitched a complete game, facing off against 20 batters, stricking out 7, giving up no walks and 2 runs on 3 hits. Kaitlin Jackson went 1 for 2, with an RBI, had 3 walks, scored 2 runs and had 4 stolen bases. Brooke Kinsey went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, had 1 walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 stolen bases. Feb. 23 the Lady Warriors went up against FAMU for the first time in many years because though they are in the same district as Aucilla, FAMU was unable to field a team. The Lady Warriors walloped their opponent 19-0. The game was called in five innings due to the ten-run rule. "Again, the girls played well," said Kinsey. "Everyone got in the game, both in the field and at the plate. Once again the pitching was slower then what we are used to, but the girls seemed to do a better job being patient at the plate and swinging at good pitches," he added. "The ball was not put in play much by FAMU so there were not a lot of opportunities for a defense, but the few times the ball was put in play the girls made the outs and committed no errors."
