Wanda R. Fortune

    Wanda R. Fortune, age 66, passed away at her home in Monticello surrounded by her family on Friday, June 9, 2017. She was born July 4, 1950 in Thomasville, Georgia to the late W.L. Sr. and Frances (Harrell) Rabon.  She was a 1968 graduate of Jefferson County High School. She went on to obtain a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in Education, and a Graduate degree from Florida State University. On December 27, 1975, she married Kenneth Wayne Fortune and settled in her hometown of Monticello, Florida. Together they had three children. Wanda was an educator for many years and loved working with children. She spent her career teaching kindergarten in Jefferson and Leon Counties, preparing little ones for their years of school ahead. She retired from the Leon County School System in 2012.
Wanda is survived by her husband, Kenneth Wayne Fortune Sr.; twin daughters, Kendra Walker (Jason Walker) of Crawfordville, and Kelli Fillyaw (Mike Fillyaw) of Monticello; son, Kenneth Wayne Fortune Jr. of Monticello; grandchildren, Kristen Walker, Cody Walker, Kaylee Walker, Jadyn Kinsey, Jaret Kinsey, and Tori Fortune; sister, Sherry Boland of Monticello; brother, Bill Rabon of Monticello, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father, W.L. Rabon Sr.; mother, Frances Rabon; and brothers, John Franklin Rabon and John Leroy Rabon.
Funeral services were  held on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Monticello. Burial followed at Oakfield Cemetery. The family received friends at First Baptist Church on Sunday from 2:00 pm until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Wanda’s name to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, Florida 32308.
